How do you go on holiday when you are a single mother or father?

It’s not easy to go on holiday as a single parent. And yet, holidays as a single parent can be an opportunity to spend some great time with your children…or to treat yourself to a solo holiday, if the children are with their other parent.

At even, we know all about the challenges of holidays when you’re a single parent. Find out our tips for going on holiday when you’re a single dad or single mum and having a great time with the kids!

How to get organised when you’re a solo mum or dad

.
Being a single mother or father, we know, takes energy. All the more reason not to stop yourself from going on holiday. There are a few simple tips for limiting the mental load during holidays with your children that will allow you to concentrate on what’s most important: having a successful family holiday. Here are our tips for organising your holiday in a way that leaves plenty of time for rest and fun:

  • Before you leave, make a list of everything you need to take with you: sunscreen, first aid kit, baby’s nappies, bottles, bottle warmer (or breast pump), t-shirts, trousers, hats, toys and stuffed animals! If you have several children, you can even plan to make a list for each one, and involve the older ones in the process. Your eldest daughter can’t bear to leave her tablet for more than three days at a time? Your son blushes at the slightest ray of sunlight and needs SPF 50? Stick it on the list, straight away.
  • Purchase your train or plane tickets in advance: by doing this in advance, you’ll not only avoid overpaying for plane or train tickets booked in the middle of the school holidays, but you’ll also be able to book more flexible tickets at almost the same price. Not a bad idea, especially if baby tends to get sick without warning.
  • Plan a schedule that leaves room for spontaneity: the art of time management is well known to single and solo parents. For a family holiday that everyone will enjoy, it is important to find the right balance between planned activities and free time to leave room for more spontaneity.

Where should you go on holiday with a baby in France when you’re a single mum

When you’re a single mum, it can be hard to make time for yourself. However, being a single mum doesn’t have to be synonymous with deprivation or mean the end of holidays.

Going away with your child can even be an opportunity to experience a holiday in a different way, and discover new holiday locations and activities. If you’re a solo mum, you could, for example, choose to go on holiday in a region close to home, or take advantage of the hospitality of your friends who have recently moved to the seaside.

If you’re on a tight budget, as is often the case when you’re a single parent, these two options will allow you to take your baby out into the fresh air without having to spend a lot of money on transport and accommodation.

If you can afford it, you can also spend a week in a holiday club or village with a kids’ club. Some places offer kids’ clubs from 4 months of age. This will allow you to enjoy the different activities of the club during the day, while your children will have with the club monitors and facilitators.

Where should you go with your son or daughter when you’re a single dad?

If you are a single dad, you may be wondering where to go on holiday with your children. It’s not easy to choose a destination that everyone will enjoy and that will also allow you to recharge your batteries.

For a family holiday, it’s important to adapt the location of your stay to the age of your children. But being a single parent doesn’t have to mean forgoing your own enjoyment in favour of your children’s: it’s more about finding a compromise between your holiday desires and what will be most suitable for your family.

So if you’re dreaming of partying in Ibiza, make sure you find a destination that allows you to meet people while keeping the kids safe. Why not go to a quieter part of southern France to see the sea with your family, or opt for a holiday village with a kids/teens club to give you a few hours of freedom each day?

What holiday should you choose when you are a single parent of a teenager?

As children reach their teens, being a single parent can present even more challenges. It’s not always easy to find activities that will appeal to a teenager who doesn’t necessarily want to spend all their time with their mum or dad. Booking a trip to a place where they can spend time with other teens their age may be the ideal solution.

In this case, certain campsites or holiday villages are the perfect place. While the teenagers are busy all day with various organised activities, you can take some time for yourself, sunbathe by the pool and, who knows, maybe even meet other single parents. Some travel agencies have even created special offers for single parents, with childcare and meals included. Because you have the right to rest, too!

How can you make time for yourself during the holidays when you are a single parent

When you are a single parent and have to look after your children alone, time is a scarce commodity. Between trips to school, meals to prepare and homework to do, life as a single parent leaves little time for socialising.

That’s why the holidays should also be an opportunity to take some time for yourself and to take a break from the rest of the year. And because we understand that letting go is even harder for single parents, we’ve created a dating app dedicated to single parents.
